I wonder how many stranger’s stories we make it into? You know, maybe someone saw you in passing and told their friends about how pretty the girl in the lavender sweater was. Or maybe they overheard you say a joke and repeated it to their friend, confessing that they heard it from some guy at the store.

I think about this all the time

  • Anonymousoh god Ryan said about Love Runs Out that it’s kinda his song about music and it all makes sense now' Can you explain this to me?
  • onerepublic-wonderland

This is gonna be just explanation of how I personally understand the song, I think OneRepublic songs and their meanings are based on personal understanding so here I go.

I’ll be your light, your match, your burning sun,
I’ll be the bright, in black that’s makin’ you run.

And we’ll feel alright, and we’ll feel alright,
'Cause we'll work it out, yeah we'll work it out.

Because Ryan said that it’s his song about music, I listen to this as if the music spoke to him, I mean: music = I, Ryan = you, we = Ryan+music (lol). I know that this part sounds like a love song but it just represent how much Ryan loves music.

I’ll be doin’ this, if you had a doubt,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.

And the music will keep being Ryan’s light, match, sun etc. till Ryan’s love for music runs out (I don’t think it ever will).

I’ll be your ghost, your game, your stadium.
I’ll be your fifty-thousand clapping like one.
And I feel alright, and I feel alright,
'Cause I worked it out, yeah I worked it out.

Again the music speaking to Ryan but here we can see some hints about music like 50,000 clapping like one (crowd). Beside that I think that the game and stadium mean that music is a hobby for Ryan - he said a few years ago that he doesn’t play video games, he rather write songs but lately he’s been saying that he plays games a lot too idk. The ghost could mean that music always follows him or maybe also something scary, we should ask Ryan!

I got my mind made up, man, I can’t let go.
I’m killing every second ‘til it saves my soul.
(Ooh) I’ll be running, (Ooh) I’ll be running,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.
And we’ll start a fire, and we’ll shut it down,
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out.

I’ll explain the 1st verse later at the mama part but generally the chorus is just Ryan’s thoughts about music and about making music. Killing every second could mean that in the past he couldn’t wait to start making music, running = to keep producing and writing, fire = music, it’s not that hard to get it ;)

There’s a maniac out in front of me.
Got an angel on my shoulder, and Mestopheles.
but mama raised me good, mama raised me right.
Mama said, “Do what you want, say prayers at night,”
And I’m saying them, ‘cause I’m so devout.
'Til the love runs out, 'til the love runs out, yeah.

This verse is about the fact that Ryan was raised in a strongly religious family and the music industry is probably not where his family wanted him to get so I personaly see this like Ryan’s the maniac because he doesn’t want to write Christian songs like his father, he wants to write any kind of songs. He keeps being good raised Christian (angel) but this obsession about music is like a devil for him (Mestopheles). Anyway his mama got probably tired of his “weirdness” and just told him to do whatever he wants but to hold on to his religion. And he does. Till the love runs out.

Oh, we all want the same thing.
Oh, we all run for something.
    run for God, for fate,
    For love, for hate,
    For gold, for rust,
    For diamonds, for dust.

In this part Ryan could be talking about musicians or just about people in general. Or about him being different because he runs for music and other people run for diamonds. It’s up to you!

I hope that I didn’t get it completely wrong and also hope this helps at least a bit :)
